SMIII: 1989

Navy 9/17/88-9/30/89

Navy became the first team to wear a Shame Mask for more than a calendar year straight after their season opening loss to BYU. They followed that up with a home loss to The Citadel. But then they got relief in a trip to Chapel Hill, knocking off the Tar Heels 12-7.

North Carolina 9/30/89-end of the season

UNC began the 1989 season with a thoroughly convincing 49-7 win over non-Div. IA VMI. However, after this warm up, they only scored 89 points in their final ten games of the season. After getting the Mask, they lost to Wake Forest, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Clemson, and South Carolina before capping the season with a 41-0 loss to Steve Spurrier's Duke team.
