SMIII: 1987

Purdue 9/19/87-10/10/87

The "Boilermaker Strain" of Shame Mask III has an interesting life. Unlike the others, which spend much of their time in the MAC or lesser conferences out west, Shame Mask III is worn by members of powerhouse conferences. After tying Louisville to bring the mask out of storage, Purdue followed with a 44-20 home loss to Notre Dame and then a 21-19 loss at Minnesota. Then Illinois came to West Lafayette, lost 9-3, and went back to Champaign wearing the Shame Mask

Illinois 10/10/87-10/17/87

The Illini wasted no time and passed the mask to Wisconsin with a 16-14 home win.

Wisconsin 10/17/87-11/7/87

The Badgers lost to Northwestern and Purdue before they pulled an upset, beating The Ohio State 26-24.

The Ohio State 11/7/87-11/21/87

The 1987 season started well for the Buckeyes, going 5-1-1 in the first seven games. However, then they lost to Michigan State (finished 9-2-1) the week before losing to Wisconsin. Then next week, they lost to an Iowa team that finished 10-3, before righting the ship and securing a great season by beating Michigan 23-20 in Ann Arbor and forcing them to wear the Shame Mask.

Michigan 11/21/87-1/2/88

Michigan became the first team to wear a Shame Mask in a bowl game when they took on Alabama in the 1988 Hall of Fame Bowl (now the Outback Bowl) in a match up of 7-4 teams. Michigan won that game 28-24.
