OSM: 2005

Central Florida: 10/2/04-9/24/05

UCF lost their final 4 games of 2003, and then all 11 in 2004 before starting 2005 with back-to-back losses to South Carolina and South Florida. But then Marshall came down to Central Florida where the Herd was not so Thunderin' and the Knights won 23-13.

Marshall: 9/24/05-10/1/05

But Marshall rebound the next week and beat SMU 16-13.

SMU: 10/1/05-10/8/05

SMU also played well the week after getting the Shame Mask, edging UAB 28-27.

UAB: 10/8/05-11/1/05

UAB tried hard to continue the streak of be-Shame-Masked teams winning, but they lost at Marshall 20-19. Then the next week, they lost 37-28 to Southern Miss, but then they beat Memphis 37-20.

Memphis: 11/1/05-11/19/05

Memphis came close in Knoxville, losing only 20-16 to the struggling Tennessee team taht would finish 5-6. The next week though, they beat Southern Miss 24-22.

Southern Miss: 11/19/05-11/26/05

Southern Miss also wasted no time and beat Tulane 26-7 the next week.

Tulane: 11/26/05-present

Tulane finished the absolutely terrible 2005 season in which they were not able to play a home game at all with only 2 wins, and they did not have a chance to rid themselves of the Shame Mask.

GGSM: 2005

San Jose State: 11/20/04-11/19/05

San Jose State lost their final 7 games of 2004; however, they start off on the right (okay, not on the wrong) foot in 2005 by beating I-AA Eastern Washington 35-24. Of course, then they lost to Illinois, San Diego State, Nevada, Utah State, Boise State, Hawai`i, and Louisiana Tech. But then they got to face a team that actually had a worse record, New Mexico State, losers of 11 straight. San Jose State won 27-10.

New Mexico State: 11/19/05-present.

New Mexico State had only one chance to shake loose the Golden Gopher Shame Mask in 2005, but they lost their final game 24-21 to Utah State and finished 0-12.

OSM: 2004

Ohio: 10/25/03-9/25/04

Ohio began their 2004 by snapping their 6-game losing streak with a convincing 42-14 win over VMI, but they were a I-AA team that went 0-11 in 2004. Then Ohio played Pittsburgh and Miami (OH) and returned to their losing ways. However, the next week, Buffalo came to Athens, OH. Ohio won 34-0. Thus, for the fourth year in a row, the Shame Mask changed faces after the Buffalo-Ohio game.

Buffalo: 9/25/04-10/2/04

Luckily for Buffalo, they would not have to wait until Ohio made their return trip next year, because the very next week, Central Florida, losers of 8 in a row, came to Buffalo. Buffalo won 48-20.

Central Florida: 10/2/04-end of the season

After getting the Shame Mask, Central Florida lost to Northern Illinois (30-28), Akron (26-21), Miami (OH) (43-7), Marshall (20-7), Ohio (17-16), Ball State (21-17), and then finally Kent State (41-24).

GGSM: 2004

SMU: 10/4/03-9/25/04

Southern Methodist took a 12-game losing streak into the 2004 season, and they continued on this pace for three more weeks with losses to Texas Tech, TCU, and Oklahoma State. However, they then got San Jose State to pay a visit. SMU won 36-13.

San Jose State: 9/25/04-10/2/04

San Jose State had just one win (against I-AA Morgan State) and two losses when they hosted Rice in their first game in the Shame Mask. Rice had beaten Houston and Hawai`i to start the season and then lost respectably 35-13 at Texas before heading to San Jose. Only 4,093 people attended the game, but were they ever in for a treat. Unless they liked defense. San Jose State edged Rice 70-63 in the highest scoring Div. I-A regulation game ever. The box score for this game is crazy:
  • Each team had 5 turnovers
  • Rice led 63-49 with eight minutes to play
  • San Jose State's QB was 10 of 17 with 5 TDs and 359 yards, but 3 INTs.
  • Rice's QBs a combined 4 completions and 3 interceptions, one of which was returned for the game-winning touchdown with two minutes left.
  • However, Rice's two QBs combined for 276 yards rushing and 4 TDS.
  • As a team, Rice ran the ball 85 times! 85 rushes for 570 yards and 8 TDs in a losing effort.
  • There were 19 total TDs: 10 rushing, 6 passing, 2 INT returns for TDs, and a punt return for a TD.
  • San Jose State won in spite of losing the time-of-possession 17:58-42:02.

San Jose State finished the season 2-9.

Rice: 10/2/04-10/9/04

Luckily for Rice after that loss, they got to go home and host SMU the next week. The Owls won 44-10. Rice finished the season 3-8.

SMU: 10/9/04-11/6/04

After getting the Golden Gopher Shame Mask back, SMU lost to Louisiana Tech and Fresno State by a combined score of 85-20 before beating Tulsa 41-35.

OSM: 2003

Buffalo: 9/28/02-10/25/02

Few things lin life are worse than starting the football season wearing the Shame Mask and knowing that you don't play Ohio until the 9th game of the season. Those first eight losses were to Rutgers, Iowa, I-AA Colgate, UConn, Akron, Central Florida, Miami (OH), and Marshall. But then, Ohio came up to Buffalo, and Buffalo won 26-17, snapping their 18-game losing streak. It was their only win of the season.

Ohio: 10/25/02-end of the season

Ohio got two wins before gaining the Shame Mask, one over I-AA Southeast Missouri State and the other over Central Florida. After getting the mask, they lost to Kent State, Akron, Miami (OH), and Marshall.

GGSM: 2003

UTEP: 11/16/02-10/4/03

The Miners of UTEP did not have a great 2003 season. They started by being one of only two teams to lose to Arizona in 2003, losing 42-7. The next week, they lost 34-13 at home to I-AA California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo. They followed that up with a home shutout loss to San Diego State, 34-0, and then a 42-14 loss at Louisville. Then UTEP was able to get a little practice winning when the I-AA Sam Houston State team that would go 2-9 came to El Paso, with the Miners taking out their frustration with a 59-14 win. Coupling this new found confidence with taking on a winless team the next week, UTEP was able to pass along the Shame Mask to SMU with a 21-19 win. It was unfortunately their last of the season, and they finished 2-11. However, since then, things have turned around with back-to-back 8-4 season in 2004 and 2005.

SMU: 10/4/03-end of the season

Southern Methodist went 0-12 in 2003. After getting the Shame Mask, they lost to San Jose State, Boise State, Tulsa, Fresno State, Louisiana Tech, Rice, and TCU. However, the season ended on a relatively high note when they only lost 20-13 to the TCU team that started 10-0 in 2003.

OSM: 2002

Ohio: 11/3/02-9/28/02

Ohio lost their final six games of 2002, and had to start the 2002 in a tough fashion, with losses at Pittsburgh, Florida, and UConn, with their first home game being a 31-0 loss to I-AA Northeastern (10-3 in 2002). However, in the fith week of the season they finally got their rematch with Buffalo. Ohio edged Buffalo 34-32 to send the Shame Mask back to Buffalo.

Buffalo: 9/28/02-end of the season

Buffalo beat Rutgers in the second week of the season, but that was their only win of the season. After getting the mask, they lost to Western Michigan, Marshall, Miami (OH), Kent State, Central Florida, Akron, and Ball State.

GGSM: 2002

Houston: 10/6/02-8/31/06

The Houston Cougars entered the 2002 season riding a 15-game losing streak and faced a Rice team coming off an 8-4 season in their first game, but they managed to pull off the upset winning 24-10.

Rice: 8/31/06-10/5/06

Rice followed their season opening loss with losses to Michigan State, Nevada Reno, and Frenso State, but then Louisiana Tech came to town and the Owls won 37-20.

Louisiana Tech: 10/5/02-10/19/02

After losing 37-34 to previously winless SMU, Louisiana Tech took on Nevada Reno and won in a shootout 50-47.

Nevada Reno: 10/19/02-11/2/02

The Shame-Mask gaining loss to La Tech marked the third week in a row that a team had scored 50 or more in the Nevada. Nevada went 1-2 in those games, but the following week, when the score was only 24-6, Nevada came out on the winning side, beating SMU.

SMU: 11/2/02-11/16/02

SMU started the season losing their first seven games, but then when the Shame Mask was on the line, they beat Louisiana Tech. The next time the Shame Mask was on the field, they were not so lucky losing to Nevada. However, they were fortunate enough to play UTEP the next week and won 42-35.

UTEP: 11/16/02-end of the season

UTEP finished the 2002 season, a year in which they won two games (one was against a Div. IAA team) and were the only team to lose to Tulsa, with a loss to Louisiana Tech after getting the Golden Gopher Shame Mask.

OSM: 2001

Eastern Michican: 11/18/00-10/27/01

EMU started the season by squeaking out a 16-12 win over IAA Southeast Missouri State, but then lost 50-3 to Maryland and 21-14 to IAA Indiana State to add another bell to the Shame Mask. Their next three losses to Western Michigan, UConn, and Ball State were less embarrassing, and then they got to play Buffalo, and they won 24-20.

Buffalo: 10/27/01-11/3/01

Possibly the best thing to happen to Kent State ever was having Buffalo join the MAC. Buffalo lost to Kent State the week before getting the Shame Mask from Eastern Michigan, and they take over for Kent State in the annual Shame Mask battle with Ohio. This year, Buffalo won that game the next week 44-0.

Ohio: 11/3/01-end of the season

Ohio lost their final three games of the season to Bowling Green, Marshall, and NC State to end the season 1-10.

GGSM: 2001

Army: 12/2/00-10/6/01

Army lost their first three games of the season to Cincinnati, UAB, and Boston College before they got to play Houston. The Black Knights of the Hudson River Valley beat the Cougars 28-14 in a match-up of two teams on 7-game losing streaks.

Houston: 10/6/01-end of the season

It was tough year for the Houston Cougars. They went 0-11. After losing to Army, they lost to Memphis, Cincinnati, Southern Miss, South Florida, Louisville, UAB, and Georgia.

OSM: 2000

Buffalo 10/30/99-9/23/00

Riding an 0-11 losing streak in 1999, Buffalo lost their first two games of 2000 to Syracuse and Rutgers by a combined score of 122-7 to set up a match-up of two teams seaking their first wins as a IA team over another IA team when they played UConn. UConn had split their first two games as a IA team, losing to Eastern Michigan before beating IAA Colgate. UConn prevailed that day, beating Buffalo 20-17. However, Buffalo took the momentum of just having a close loss, and spun it into their first IA win the following week against Bowling Green.

Bowling Green: 9/23/00-9/30/00

The bad news--you're 0-4 and you just lost to end Buffalo's 14-game losing streak and get the Shame Mask. The good news--you get to play Kent State the next week. Bowling Green won 18-11.

Kent State: 9/30/00-10/7/00

It wouldn't be a college football season with Kent State losing a Shame Mask game. However, this time they strategically timed their only win in 2000 to follow the Shame Mask loss when they beat Central Michigan 24-21.

Central Michigan: 10/7/00-11/11/00

After getting the Shame Mask, Central Michigan lost to Ohio, Ball State, and Eastern Michigan before beating Western Michigan 21-17. It was their second and final win of the season.

Western Michigan: 11/11/00-11/18/00

Stunned by only their second loss of the season, the Broncos of WMU were able to right their ship and beat Eastern Michigan 28-0 the following week. Unfortunately they lost the MAC Championship two weeks later.

Eastern Michigan: 11/18/00-end of the season

Eastern Michigan did not have any more games to play in 2000.

GGSM: 2000

The 2000 season saw the Golden Gopher Shame Mask visit all three service academies.

Air Force: 11/27/99-9/9/00

Air Force easily beat IAA Cal State Northridge in their season opener, and nicely warmed up, the beat BYU the following week 31-23.

BYU: 9/9/00-9/23/00

BYU lost to Mississippi State before UNLV came to town and the Cougars won 10-7.

UNLV: 9/23/00-9/30/00

UNLV had to wait only one week to get rid of the mask when they beat Air Force 34-13.

Air Force: 9/30/00-10/7/00

Air Force's second be-Shame-Masked stint of 2000 was much shorter thanks to Navy, who came to Colorado Springs having already lost their first four games of the season. Air Force won 27-13 and finished the season 9-3.

Navy: 10/7/00-12/2/00

Another rough year for the Naval Academy in 2000. After gaining the Golden Gopher Shame Mask, the Midshipmen lost to Notre Dame, Rutgers, Toledo, Tulane, and Wake Forest to set up the season ending match-up with 1-10 Army. But hey, you always have throw out the records for the Army-Navy game. This year was no exception with Navy getting the 30-28 upset win.

Army: 12/2/00-end of the season

Army had no more games to play in 2000.

OSM: 1999

Kent State: 9/26/98-9/25/99

Ah, Kent State, so comfortable in the Shame Mask. They entered the 1999 season riding a 13-game losing streak, and continued it with losses Cincinnati, Navy, and Pitt before they beat Bowling Green 41-27.

Bowling Green: 9/25/99-10/2/99

Bowling Green however wasted no time and passed the Shame Mask along at their first opportunity, beating Toledo, 34-23.

Toledo: 10/2/99-10/9/99

Toledo found the perfect tonic for a team wearing the Shame Mask--a match-up with Kent State the week after getting the mask. Toledo won 47-7.

Kent State: 10/9/99-10/30/99

When Kent State acquired the mask this time, it was only their second loss in a row. They would continue to lose for two more weeks against Miami (OH) and Northern Illinois. But then a new challenger emerged in the form of a Buffalo. Kent State won 41-20.

Buffalo: 10/30/99-end of the season

It was tough first year for Buffalo in Div. IA. They were 0-7 when they lost to Kent State, including a loss to UConn, which was Div. IAA at the time. The week after getting the mask, they lost 20-13 to Div. IAA Hofstra, before rounding out the winless season with losses to Virginia and Miami (OH).

GGSM: 1999

1999 was a strange year for the Golden Gopher Shame Mask. When wearing the mask, teams went a collective 9-2, sending the mask bouncing all around the southwest. And oddly enough both losses were by New Mexico.

New Mexico State: 11/21/98-9/11/99

After starting the season with a win over something called New Mexico Highlands, a tune up for their match up with New Mexico. The Aggies won 35-28.

New Mexico: 9/11/99-10/9/99

New Mexico beat non-Div. IA Northern Arizona, but then lost to Boise State and had an off week before they played San Diego State. The Lobos won 24-21.

San Diego State: 10/99/99-10/16/99

San Diego State played Colorado State the next week and won 17-10.

Colorado State: 10/16/99-10/23/99

Colorado State played Wyoming the following week and won 24-13.

Wyoming: 10/23/99-11/6/99

Wyoming had to wait through an off week but the first time they took to the field in the mask, they won, beating Utah 43-29.

Utah: 11/6/99-11/13/99

Utah beat New Mexico 52-7.

New Mexico: 11/13/99-11/27/99

New Mexico lost to Wyoming before beating Air Force 33-28.

Air Force: 11/27/99-end of the season

Air Force did not have any more games left in 1999.
