GGSM 1988

1988 = A good year for football in the state of New Mexico (relative to the state of Kansas)

New Mexico 9/12/1987-9/10/1988

After losing all 11 games in 1987, and their first in 1988, the Lobos prepared well for revenge and beat their in-state rival New Mexico State in a sqeaker 36-34. New Mexico went on win one other game in 1988, beating Colorado State 24-23. So that's two wins, each over a team that finished the season 1-10 by a total of only 3 points. Not good.

New Mexico State 9/10/1988-10/1/1988

The Aggies on wore the Shame Mask for two weeks though, losing to Fresno State and Utah State. But then they got to go to Lawrence, Kansas, where their mere 8-game losing streak looked pretty good to the fans of the Kansas Jayhawks, who had not beaten a Div. IA team in over two years. New Mexico State easily transfered the Shame Mask to Kansas, winning 42-29. It was their only win of the season.

Kansas 10/1/1988-11/5/1988

Football in the state of Kansas in the mid-80s was not a pretty sight. After a relatively good start to the decade, the Jayhawks went 3-8 in 1986, after starting the season 3-1, thanks to two wins over non-Div. IA opponents. Then in 1987, they managed to beat Southern Illinois, and tie the Kansas State team that finished 0-10-1. It was this same Kansas State team that they were able to pass the mask along to after wearing it for four weeks, winning 30-12 in Lawrence.

Kansas State 10/1/1988-end of 1988

The Kansas State fans must have been very envious of the "success" of their cross-state rival Kansas. In the three season before 1988, they had a total of three wins and one tie (2-0-1 against Kansas, 1-29 against everyone else (the win was against non-Div. IA Western Illinois.)) 1988 was even worse--they began to lose to Kansas. They went 0-11 in 1988.

So, let's recap 1988.
New Mexico, New Mexico State, Kansas, Kansas State, and we'll throw Colorado State in there too. These five teams played four games against each other in 1988. In their other games, they went 1-47. (CSU beat 3-8 San Diego State.)

GGSM 1987

1987 = Not a good year for football in the state of New Mexico

New Mexico State 9/20/1986-9/12/1987

After an offseason locked in the Golden Gopher Shame Mask, New Mexico State lost their first game of the season to UTEP, before beating their in-state rival New Mexico 17-14 to end their ten game losing streak. The was almost certainly the highlight of the season, since in only one game did they score more than 17, when they got their only other win of the season, beating non-Div. IA McNeese State 32-13.

New Mexico 9/12/1987-end of 1987

It was terrible year for the Lobos of New Mexico. Their first loss of the season to Utah in their first game went unpunished. They were not so lucky with the next week, when they lost to New Mexico State to get the GGSM. And they kept on losing for the rest of the season. They were the only team to lose to 1-11 Colorado State. Ouch.
